Улучшенный ремейк - это игра, которая пытается воссоздать дизайн и сценарии старой игры, разработанной с использованием менее продвинутых технологий. В некоторых случаях игровой процесс, сюжет и общая концепция остаются в основном прежними, но графика и звук могут быть изменены или полностью переделаны; в других игровой процесс, сюжет и игровой мир, возможно, претерпели изменения.

Общее эмпирическое правило заключается в том, что если в оригинальной игре есть уровни, и большинство или все из них узнаваемы в новой игре, но также ясно, что разработчики воссоздали их заново, то это улучшенный ремейк.

Ремастер использует оригинальную игру и улучшает некоторые ее аспекты, такие как размер текстур или сложность модели, которые, вероятно, были невозможны для аппаратного обеспечения во время первоначального выпуска. Ремастеры не входят в эту группу.
В эту группу также не входят "улучшенные порты", где игра может казаться улучшенной из-за того, что она находится на технически более совершенной платформе, и некоторые функции могут быть добавлены, но основная часть игры просто портирована, а не создана заново.
