Самостоятельные дополнения представляют собой игры, созданные на базе уже существующего проекта, однако не требующие установки оригинала для запуска. Подобные релизы зачастую привносят новые элементы в игровую механику или развивают сюжетную линию, сохраняя при этом фундаментальную основу геймплея. Такие проекты занимают промежуточную нишу между классическими дополнениями и полноценными сиквелами, предлагая игрокам расширенный опыт в знакомых декорациях.

Важно отделять данный формат от других категорий: в этот список не включаются масштабные спин-оффы, переиздания, включающие оригинальный проект целиком, а также игры, распространяемые по эпизодической модели. Несмотря на то что издатели могут позиционировать такие продукты как полноценные продолжения, ключевыми признаками самостоятельного дополнения остаются близость игрового процесса, схожесть повествования, общность технической базы и, как правило, небольшой временной интервал между выходом оригинала и аддона.
