When Transport Tycoon was released in 1994 all my friends were playing it all the time but I couldn't because my sucky graphics card had only 256kb memory and Transport Tycoon needed more (graphics are great). So I was able to play this game first time with my own computer about three years later and even today I like to play it a lot sometimes because the game is one of the best strategy games ever made.
The idea of the game is to be a leading transport company in the game's world - you build car, train, boat and aircraft services to transport different kind of stuff like wood, mail, steel and passengers from place A to place B. For example coal should be transported from the coal mine to power plant. You'll get paid everytime when the cargo reaches its destination - distance and amount of cargo affect to the payment you get from the transportation (tip: a big train has also a longer load/unload time). With the money you get from your transport services you pay the running costs of your vechicles, build new transport lines and replace old vechicles with newer ones.
Before starting a new game you better watch the tutorials first. Tutorials tell you the basic things of the game pretty well and in the game you can always use the pop-up help. Anyway, the game is easy to learn but running a profitable company isn't that easy, at least when playing with the hard level.
Transport Tycoon is a great fun and you can play it for hours without getting bored, well, you'll probably get bored when all the computer players have gone bankrupt and the building limit is full. If you start playing the game from the 1930s it would take about three days to play it through - new aircrafts and trains keep up the interest for the game and you can play it for hours non-stop. Multiplayer game also increases the life time of this game. However, the multiplayer game doesn't support network so you have to play it with a modem or with a serial cable.
Graphics of the game are great - TT looks pretty good even today. As far as I remember the sounds were ok (sounds didn't work with my new soundcard). Well, if the sounds were just ok, the music is really good - it's some kind of jazz-music and I don't personally like jazz-music but TT's music is good.
